Dear Parents and Guardians:
Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year at Volney Elementary School! I am looking forward to a year full of excitement, achievement, and success for everyone at Volney.
The Volney Parent/Student Handbook contains much of the information about the policies and procedures that you and your children will need to be familiar with in order to ensure a successful year. Please take some time to become acquainted with the enclosed information and keep the calendar handy for future reference. This calendar has been designed with parents in mind; please share any important information with your children as well.
Many of the programs and procedures that were in place will continue to occur here at Volney. This means that Morning Meetings will be a part of each day, a focus on character education will remain, and the uninterrupted 90-minute literacy block will occur at each grade level. A major shift for us this year will be hosting the Fifth Grade Team from Lanigan Elementary while their school undergoes renovations. We are happy to have them join us and look forward to a great year together.
Continuing at Volney this year is the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) philosophy. This is a set of beliefs that models expected behaviors throughout the school and rewards students for the positive actions that they choose. You will see posters of the four school wide expectations throughout the school. They are; Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be a Problem Solver. There will also be displays showing what each of these expectations look like in different areas of the school. Your child will learn these expectations and will have opportunities to get rewarded for positive behavior in school.
The building goals for staff this year are a focus on Writing, continuing to develop a system of response when students struggle with their learning (called RtI), and increasing positive communication with parents. There will be a variety of opportunities for you to be involved in your child's education. Please consider how you can take more of an active role at school; chaperone a field trip, volunteer in your child's classroom, attend parent teacher meetings, help with the book fair, or even work that you can help with from home. Parents are a huge factor in the educational success of their children - let's work together to make everyone even more successful.
As always, our staff will work hard to provide your children with an education that includes both a focus on academics, as well as character building and social education that will help to ensure success for a lifetime. I know that the high expectations for Volney are well deserved and will continue to produce great results for all students. I wish the best to you and your family throughout this coming year.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Hendrickson
Principal
