Principal's Message

Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year at Volney Elementary School ! I am looking forward to a year full of excitement, achievement, and success for everyone at Volney. Volney has a tradition of success and a family oriented atmosphere which contributes to a feeling of a shared community. Volney has set and continues to strive toward high academic standards as well as social learning standards for everyone in the building. This year's theme is “Hand in Hand, We All Learn Together”, so feel free to lend a hand or ask for one if you need to.

Many of the programs and procedures that were in place and have been implemented over recent years will continue to occur here at Volney. This means that the Morning Meeting program will be a part of each day, a focus on our monthly character education will remain, and the uninterrupted 90-minute literacy block will continue at each grade level.

New to Volney this year will be a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) philosophy. This is a set of beliefs that models expected behaviors throughout the school and rewards students for the positive actions that they choose. You will see posters of the four school wide expectations throughout the school. They are: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be a Problem Solver. The children learn what these expectations mean for them as a student here at Volney as well as how these four expectations will serve them for a lifetime.

The building goals for staff this year are a focus on the delivery of instruction, literacy, implementing the PBIS plan, and increasing parent involvement. There are a variety of opportunities for everyone to be involved in our children's education. Please consider how you can take more of an active role at school; chaperone a field trip, volunteer in the classroom, attend parent teacher meetings, help with the book fair, or even work that can be done from home. Parents are a huge factor in the educational success of their children. Working together will make everyone even more successful.

As always, our staff will work hard to provide your children with an education that includes both a focus on academics as well as character building and social education that help to ensure success for a lifetime. I know that the high expectations for Volney are well deserved and will continue to produce great results for all students.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Hendrickson
Principal
