The Fulton Board of Education welcomes residents, staff and students
to its meetings. We appreciate your interest in our schools!
One of the goals of the Board of Education is to conduct board business
openly, soliciting and encouraging broad-based involvement in the decision-making
processes by the public, the staff and the students. The information
is presented on this webpage to promote understanding and create a partnership
among the schools, the staff and the community.
Board of Education decisions affect the education of our children and
the well-being of our community. The board can better represent its
constituents when members of the community take the time to observe
the board in action, to express opinions and to ask question. We are
pleased to have you here and hope that you will join us often!
Your role here is critical:
Fulton Board of Education meetings are regularly held on the second
and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Education Center
board room. The board welcomes public participation at its business
meetings - in fact, when you express your views and ask questions, you
help the board to more accurately represent the interests of the entire
community.
Meetings dates are listed in the school calendar and are posted in each
school building, as well as being advertised in the local newspapers.
Copies of the agenda, which outlines the order of business for each
meeting, are available to the public at the beginning of each meeting.
You will have an opportunity to speak during the "Public Forum"
portion of the agenda. When speaking, please state your name and identify
the organization, if any, that you represent.
You may also express your concerns in a letter. Correspondence should
be sent to: Fulton Education Center, c/o Fulton Board of Education,
167 South Fourth Street, Fulton, NY 13069.
How meetings are conducted:
The agenda and supporting documents are mailed to board members in
advance of the meeting date to allow them time to study and review the
information. During the business meeting it may appear as if some items
are being voted upon with little or no discussion. However, this is
not usually the case, as some items may have appeared on a previous
agenda or may have been discussed at length at a special or executive
meeting.
Special and executive sessions may be held in addition to regular business
meetings. Special sessions are planning meetings regarding the management
of the school district; the board has the opportunity to study and discuss
specific topics and review items to be acted upon at future business
meetings. Executive sessions are held when the board need to discuss
personnel matter, labor negotiations and other matters defined as confidential
by the state's open meeting law. These sessions are closed to the public.
The usual order of business at a school board meeting is as follows:
